Prepping The Nursery: Furniture Checklist

February 17, 2016

There are a ton of things you need to get done in the 9 months leading up to your baby’s arrival, but preparing the nursery is probably near the top of your list. While there are endless possibilities when it comes to decorating the nursery, it’s important that you start with the essentials. Here is a checklist of the furniture items you’ll need to get your perfect nursery off to a good start!

A Convertible Crib

The crib is the centerpiece of the nursery so it’s important you find one that is the right style and color to set the rest of the nursery up for success. We know that cribs are not cheap, but it’s also important to think long-term when you’re purchasing a crib. All of our cribs are convertible so that you can still use it once your baby grows. The majority of our cribs are 4-in-1’s, meaning they convert from a crib, to a toddler bed, a daybed and finally, a full-size (double) bed. If you feel that a 4-in-1 is too much for your needs,  we also have a few 3-in-1’s and 2-in-1’s available. As an even greater cost savings, we have some cribs that come with a changing table already attached! With dozens of cribs available across multiple brands, you’re bound to find at least one crib that catches your eye. Click on the brands at top of the page to start browsing!

Pro tips:

  • Purchase and assemble your crib well in advance so you have plenty of time to order replacement parts before the baby arrives if necessary
  • Avoid using secondhand cribs and cribs that are more than 10 years old because you cannot guarantee how safe they will be and if they are compliant to current standards

A Crib Mattress

For both you and your baby’s sake, you’re going to want a quality crib mattress. Find one that is firm and made specifically for babies to support their growing bones and eliminate suffocation hazards. There are hundreds of crib mattresses out there and you can choose either a foam or innerspring mattress, just make sure it’s on budget, comfortable and durable (look for ones with water resistant liners!). We recommend you check out the Graco Premium Foam Crib and Toddler Bed Mattress. It will last until your child outgrows the toddler bed/daybed!

A Glider and Ottoman

Don’t overlook the importance of having a glider and ottoman in the nursery. Not only are they a nursery essential, they look great in any nursery too! It’s something you’ll use multiple times a day and will be a life saver for those 3am feedings. The glider and ottoman makes a great spot for you to relax with your baby, and the smooth gliding motion will help soothe your baby to sleep. With multiple styles ranging from semi-upholstered to fully upholstered and available in a variety of colors and patterns, you’re bound to find a glider and ottoman that’s perfect for your nursery.

Pro-tip: Don’t “wait and see” if you need a glider and ottoman. Moms and Dads who waited a while before purchasing a glider often claim that it is a game changer and wonder how they ever survived without one before!

A Changing Table

While you can get by with a changing pad on the ground or the bed, we believe that it’s important to include a dedicated changing table as a nursery essential . We laid out the top 5 reasons why you should get a changing table in a previous blog post called, “Changing Table: Yay or Nay?”

We’ve got a variety of changing tables available in the Storkcraft and Graco brands.

Pro-tip: Once your baby is potty trained, you can still use the changing table as storage space for toys and books!

A Chest or Dresser

Graco Auburn Dresser Collection

A nursery isn’t complete unless you have a chest or dresser. Nurseries are often short on storage space so a dresser is the perfect spot to store linens and toys in addition to your baby’s clothes. It is something that will last for years and your child can use the same dresser as they grow up, just like the convertible crib. Make sure you look for dressers with anti-tipping measures like wall mounts, and have drawer safety stops to prevent them from falling out onto small children or slamming shut on fingers. Our chests and dressers are available in 3, 5, and 6 drawer varieties and multiple non-toxic finishes. We currently carry dressers under the Storkcraft and Graco brands.
