Meet Mandi

By Dawn at Stork Craft

Happy New Year from Stork Craft Manufacturing to all the caregivers and parents out there!

We’re going to start off the New Year by featuring Mandi, a self described “Former kindergarten assistant teacher turned SAHM to a beautiful baby girl”, and fellow blogger.  You can find her blog here:

 The 411:

-Name: Mandi

-Child’s age: 12 months

-Location: Westminster, CO

-Occupation: WAHM – Independent Distributor for Shaklee

The Low Down:

SC: What has been the biggest surprise about motherhood since you have become a mom?

Mandi: I never knew what unconditional love was until I became a mom.  I never realized I could love so much!

SC: How has your life changed since you became a mom?

Mandi: I am now a role model for my daughter, so I knew I needed to make some changes.  I eat healthier, exercise and live a “greener” life.  My life now revolves around my daughter.

SC: What has been the biggest challenge for you in motherhood?

Mandi: Shortly after giving birth, both my daughter and I became very ill and were hospitalized at two different hospitals.  I contracted an E. Coli Infection and my daughter contracted Bacterial Spinal Meningitis from Salmonella.  Not being able to take care of my own baby was the biggest challenge of motherhood!

SC: How do you (or plan to) manage your work life balance?

Mandi: Fortunately, I work from home and can create my own schedule.  I usually work during her naps and after she goes to bed at night.

SC: Any advice for moms-to-be or new moms?

Mandi: Always listen to your heart and your intuition.  There are so many different opinions out there, but only you can make the right choices for you and your family.

SC: Do you have any recommendations on any baby products that you can’t live without and that every mother should also have?

Mandi: Well, I’m a little biased.  But I can’t live without the Shaklee Baby products and multivitamins, as well as, their safe cleaning products.

Guest Post: The Joys or Lack Thereof in Potty Training

Guest Post: The Joys or Lack Thereof in Potty Training by Crystal Reagan

The hot topic of most parenting boards that I’ve frequented is potty training.  Everybody has their own views, their suggestions and sometimes even their critiques.

My daughter was potty trained right after her second birthday and the whole process took one whole weekend.  It was easy peasy, nothing to it.  She was potty trained even at night.  I had no idea potty training was that easy.

It’s not.  That was a total fluke.  Or maybe it’s just boys are hardheaded which leads me to my experiences potty training my boys.

I couldn’t and I didn’t.  I know it sounds ridiculous and probably makes me sound like a horrible mother, but I tried everything in the book – to no avail.  No matter what I did for them, I could not get them potty trained.  I gave up and just figured that surely the other kids making fun of them in kindergarten would do the job but thankfully it didn’t have to go that far.

When my oldest son was three and I had totally given up, my then only 2 children stayed the weekend with my parents.  When they came back on Sunday, I couldn’t believe that just 2 days with Nana and my little guy was potty trained.  2 days!  I’d been trying for months to get that kid to go in the toilet and he’s gone for 2 days and he comes back potty trained.

I was and still am totally thankful that somehow my mom got through to him.

So, the last few months I’ve been trying to potty train my youngest son and once again I’ve had absolutely no luck.  No matter what I did, he just didn’t get it.  We tried the shoot and aim method with Cheerios and Goldfish but that didn’t work.  I tried a reward chart but that didn’t work.  I tried time outs for accidents but that didn’t work.  I tried bribing with candy but that didn’t work either.  Once again, nothing worked!  Here I was already a failure with my first son and now I was failing with my second son.

Two weeks ago the husband and I decided to take a weekend away and sent all the children to Nana’s house.  Can you believe that when we picked the children up on Sunday that my youngest was potty trained?  Again, just 2 days with Nana and he came back potty trained.

This all got me thinking.  What if all it takes is someone else doing the training.  My children always act so much better around others than they do with me.  I’m pretty sure my children aren’t the only ones because I’ve heard it before especially after watching someone else’s child.  Maybe it’s the change of scenery or just taking them out of their comfort zone that sparks something inside of them.  I honestly don’t know but I wish I did.  I know there are thousands of parents struggling right now with potty training.  It’s a very aggravating and emotional time for both the parents and the children.

So, I guess I mention all of this to say – try something out of the ordinary.  If you have a family member or friend that is willing to help, take them up on it.  I’m truly amazed at how my two boys went from using 5-6 diapers a day, to only needing a diaper at night in just 2 days.
